I'm sorry to be posting so many problems lately, but I'm hoping that the collective wisdom of this community can help my family out with an issue we're facing.
As you guys know my mom just recently moved back to the states after 2 years in Germany. She got a job in Texas and started 2 weeks ago. We've been taking care of Estee while she tries to find a place to live.
The issue we're having is finding a place for her to live. She needs to rent because she's not sure about the job, the area etc. The rentals in the areas she wants to live are managed by the same few companies and all of them are telling her that they do not allow specific breeds due to insurance reasons. One of the breeds they do not allow are huskies or malamutes.
We adopted Estee from Border collie rescue in 2003, she was a puppy then. As she grew, it became very apparent that she has some husky in her but she had some border collie characteristics as well. Now that she is 30 lbs overweight and her coat was shaved this past summer, she looks very husky.
The place she wants to rent wants her to bring the dog in for them to assess and take a photo of. If they have concerns about the breed they will consult with a veterinarian. They claim no exceptions for any of the breeds or mixes of the breeds on their list.
Estee is 8 years old, a minimum of 30 lbs overweight and had 3 knee surgeries this past summer. Aside from that, she is not at all aggressive towards people and only slightly reactive towards other dogs that get in her face. She has no bite history and has never growled at a person, even at the vets. My mom used to take her to group therapy sessions at the VA and my sister did some therapy work with her. She has her CGC and TT.
She is super obedient and a very nice dog. The place that my mom is wanting to rent is a house, not an apartment or duplex and there are no neighbors and the yard is completely fenced.
My mom is talking about dying Estee so her greyish brown areas are darker, giving her a few freckles and making her ears black instead of having the white undersides. She's found a pet safe dye and I think if Estee were darker she could pass as an elderly border collie (her build is a bit more border collie) My mom isn't super worried about them coming back out to confirm, she just needs to pass her through the interview.
This is a bit dishonest though so I'm hoping that the minds on this board could help us come up with some other alternatives or ideas.
She's going to keep looking as well and see if she can find something else, she's just getting frustrated and would like to not have to live out of a hotel anymore.
Getting another dog is also not an option. She wants Estee. Worse come to worse my sister or I could keep Estee but the preference would be for her to be able to stay with my mom.
Also, if anyone knows of any pet friendly housing near Fort Hood Texas, that would be lovely.
Thanks
