Charging dogs

I was out this morning walking Jack--my one year golden. he behaves wlel on the leash etc. As we passe done house on our way back we heard two cho labs barking. Then all of a sudden they came charging at us. Charging. Hair was standing up on their backs and one was running at record speed :) I asked Jack to sit---quickly removed a control spray I use sometimes for Jack if he pulls(which he hasn't but I still carry in my pocket to make a hissing noise to make him stop) I sprayed the can away from Jack and the other charging lab. The lab stopped but the other continued but at a slower pass--his hair also was standing up on his back --Jack just sat there and actually looked up at me a few times. I said "Good"

The owner finally came out but not until the lab was wiythin 2 feet of us.

My question is did I handle this right? Jack was very wel behaved

What would cause two labs to come charging from a back yard at us?
