Voodoo is certain we're all going to be slaughtered at any given moment.
So, any noise..ANY noise..and he's off. Person walks down the road/squirrel jumps tree to tree/I shut a cabinet door...yeah.
If he wants to go outside with us..hysteria.
Put him in the crate to calm his hysteria and he has a b!tchfit. I have sympathy for parents out there with kids that had Those Tantrums.
Hopping up and down, yodeling and barking.
Any additional People Stress, and he's 10 times more reactive.
Add Strider to the mix..and then Henry..and well, I'm happy to admit I cannot manage all three of them when they all fire off.
Voo is the catalyst here.
We tried everything we could think of and scoured the library for ideas. Voo bested them all.
So. Electronic bark collar.
We started out as directed, day 1 was beep only, with lots of verbal support. Amusing to watch him freeze and search the skies for Alien Beeps.
Yesterday, we started the electronic corrections (a pretty way to say shocks). I admit that I dreaded that first time, felt horribly guilty.
Questioned my ability to train my dogs. All of that fun stuff.
OF COURSE, he didn't bark all freaking day. I wanted to be inside with him, to praise the quiet, etc.
Finally, he freaked over a neighbor shutting their car door. The beep went off, he paused, fired off again and got buzzed. I was extremely tense waiting for a shriek. He looked quite startled, but ...no, I didn't flash fry my dog as I had feared. I was able to settle myself enough to calmly direct and praise. Yay me. LOL
He did really, really well on the lowest setting, shortest correction. I'm hoping we can work through this at that level, but I know now that I'm not ruining my dog.
After a few hours, I went outside with the other boys and Voo started a tantrum. That ended fairly quickly. I ran back in while we was quiet and gave some treats, then went outside again. QUIET.
He was fairly worn out by the end of the day, but was his happy Vooself.
Strider and Henry were MUCH easier to settle without Chicken Little screaming his head off.
I had normal dog noise, not Hounds of the Baskervilles over Every. Single. Sound.
Not for everyone and every dog, but for Voo I have good feelings about this.
