Barking at Visitors

Hi,
Logan is barking at visitors who come to our house. He does the same thing meeting new people when he is on leash. He looks and sounds ferocious when he does it, but I know that if the person came at him quickly, he would run away, tail between his legs. 
 
What should we be doing to help him to remain calm when greeting people?
