Dog stealing things

Hi, I have a one year old JRT mix and he steals things that don't belong to him.  Let's see, pillows, combs, brushes, books, things out of the recycle bin, hair clips, shoes, I could go on for days, basically anything he can wrap his teeth around.  I have to bride him with a yummy treat to get him to drop it.  If he gets something that I do not see him get, he will destroy whatever it it.  He has LOTS of toys that he plays with and chews on.  I am looking for a reason why he does this and am I doing the right thing by briding him with a treat to get him to drop it??
