puppy

ok i do not have a dog yet but would love to get one 
my question is simple i work and am single so this dog would be home by himself about 8.5 to 9 hrs a day  5 days a week i want the companionship of a dog after my son leaves (he is turning 18 next yr) but am starting to think it might not be fair to the dog
i keep changing my mind i want companionship now (my son is always doing his own thing ) but i know it makes more sense to wait a year and i want a puppy (but I keep thinking I should get a mature dog i think they would handle all that alone time better) now i have been thinking that its not fair to the dog to have one at all when im not home half the day
I keep deciding its never the right time not because i dont want one just trying to juggle the responsible thing to do with my wants and loneliness (no i am not super lonely lol just would enjoy some canine companionship )
basically im hoping ppl will say yes get a puppy no big deal its normal and make me feel better about wanting a puppy lol  but afraid ppl will say no u should not have a dog unless you have more time which for me means never :(  
any advice or opinions would be wonderful ty for reading
