I've been trying to find a puppy class for Delhi and it's been a little more difficult than expected. It seems that everyone I knew isn't training anymore, retired or dropped off the face of the Earth (well - at least moved out of Memphis Metro). I found one but they don't actually do puppy classes, it's basic obedience. Last time I took a class from them (almost 9 years ago) I thought the trainer explained how to use a clicker really well, she taught us how to use it with luring and shaping. The trainer also wasn't clicker 'ga-ga' and pretty sensible about training in general. But the down side was the room the class was in was a little small for the number and type of dogs that were in the class. Nothing happened but the trainer had to work really hard at making sure there was enough personal space and as a student I always felt that I had to be on high alert while trying to listen to the instructions.
Since that's all I could find - I got in contact with a lady that I took some agility classes from, she doesn't do puppy or basic obedience but she always has a referral... or at least she did. Apparently all the people I knew - she knew and those were her references. She did offer two suggestions one she had a good opinion of and the other she had no opinion of - she knew this person offered puppy classes but she had no experience with her or knew nothing of the techniques used.
Well the one with the good opinion is out of the question. There's just no way I could make it to the classes. Even if all the stars lined up in my favor it's 50 miles one way. So difficult at best.
The other is a bit closer and I could make it to class. I sent an email last Friday asking what their vaccination requirements were for puppy classes and I'm waiting on a reply. Considering it was Labor Day weekend I'll give them awhile to respond before I call.
anyway I'm kind of torn - do I go with what I know and do just a basic obedience class with Delhi or drive a little farther for a puppy class and maybe not return (waste a class fee) because they are some type of puppy haters (Kidding - a little ;) ) Although from their website I think it will be fine.
Anyone Care to check out some websites with me - give me a general opinion of what you see? Personally, I see nothing that gives me the creeps or I would just say no to.
This first one is the place I took classes before - http://www.raot.org/information/training/basicapp.htm There's not photos or anything special on this website. very vague (maybe bland is a better term), I think.
This is the place I can't make it to - but I'll put it here anyway http://hideawayfarmcanineacademy.com/ She has some youtube of her and her dogs.
This last one is the no opinion one http://www.dogwoods4dogs.com/Home it has a little video to.
