How to Put the Fearful Dog in Control of What They Fear

An easy, effective and fun game to play that can turn a dog's "oh no" into "Oh Good!". One of my favorite games for dogs who are fearful of sounds and objects.

How to Put the Fearful Dog in Control of What They Fear

This is how, when I first met a large breed owner, that what Sarah is talking about first occurred to me, and the story of how it occurred to the owner through an intuitive plan.  I don't recommend this approach but it does illustrate an aspect of it at the extreme:
I once met an experience owner/trainer of a large mastiff breed, that had a well earned reputation of having many individuals that were protective/aggressive and often presented a real danger to people.  I noted that, at the rare breed dog show where we met, the judges and event sponsors spoke of her well and with a sense of trust, but certainly concern with the breed as a whole.  She did very well at owning/handling/training these dogs such that the potential for danger to humans was greatly reduced.  She knew the limitations of that handling/training so that the dogs could be loved/enjoyed, but realized, not at all times and all places.  Part of her smarts was realizing that physical management often was the best solution.
She had out door kennels in which one or more dogs could be during the day when people were coming in and out of her property and home.  The group of kennels were surrounded by lawn, which needed to be mowed.  She, at one point, decided that she wanted to hire some help to save a bit of time in her life.  The problem started when a new big beautiful young male, that she had just recently come to own and love, was out in the kennel and the first person she hired to mow the lawn started in on the area surrounding the kennel.
The second the mower showed up the new dog went completely and powerfully ballistic.  There is nothing like 150 lbs of ferocious, intelligent war dog focused on destroying what they see as a threat, when encountering a barrier, to get anyones bones rattle from head to toe.  The barks, growls and roars alone are enough to get ones feet running immediately in the opposite direction with out any need for a moments help from the brain.   The dog repeatedly hit the fence like bulldozer at full throttle.  The new help decided to find other work, elsewhere.
Frustrated by lack of discussion with the former help, her first solution was to eventually hire some one else with a little stronger constitution.  She had great attention to detail regarding safety so she checked the integrity of the fence after mowing the area her self.  Doubts crept up when, she mowed right up to the edge of the enclosure several times and found the issue wasn't certainly getting any better.  All she got from the next, new, help was an adamant willingness to mow anywhere but the area near the kennel.  Not a solution really at all, for her.
An odd inspiration came at a yard sale.  Out and about on a Saturday she noticed a $10.00 mower that the owner said would need a ton work before it ran.  She offered $5.00 and loaded it, then picked up 2 more that day.  Once home she emptied out all the fluids and removed the cables, then threw the first one in the arena and stood back to watch the show; more importantly to make sure the dog wasn't injured or going to be.
She was stunned by the ferocity and the eventual complete demise of the lawn mower which was helplessly air born when it hit the fence more than once.  One thing she noted was how through/unrelenting/detailed he was about the task before claiming victory with a lifted leg on the only recognizable piece, the bent remains of the body.  This was, of course, followed by a well deserved nap in the middle of his shattered and dispersed foe.  When he was brought back into the house for the evening all the many pieces were removed, most of it in a garbage bag.
The next days contestants fate was much the same, though the intensity of the attack waned much sooner and the destruction was not so complete.  The final entrant brought the biggest surprise.  The big dog in response to the intrusion sauntered over and sniffed it, nawed on it a few times before offering his final sentiments with a now indifferent lifting of a leg.
When the next mowing began there was a merely a raised head, a brief moment of intent inspection from the kennel and then a return to normal dog life.  Mowers now were fully realized as being; really nothing to be concerned about.  The help had his fears to overcome but in the end it all worked out well.
P.S. As noted in Sarah's talk this method too was a little hard on the machinery.:)

Astraphobia is a fear of

Astraphobia is a fear of thunder, and it is a very common phobia in dogs. The degree of this fear can differ between dogs. Some may just have a mild fear of thunder. In this case, a dog may tremble slightly or you may notice flattened ears and a tucked tail during a thunderstorm. Thanks.

Domestic dogs inherited

Domestic dogs inherited complex behaviors from their wolf ancestors, which would have been pack hunters with complex body language. These sophisticated forms of social cognition and communication may account for their trainability, playfulness, and ability to fit into human households and social situations, and these attributes have given dogs a relationship with humans that has enabled them to become one of the most successful species on the planet today. Thanks.
