For man
y years, as a pro dog trainer, I have observed that people seemed to, rather miraculously, get dogs who offer opportunity for growth in some key way. Certainly has been true in my life. I chalked this recurring pattern up to "fate," "karma," or "the universe" being at work.
Then I spent time with a friend's dog. A friend I knew was wrestling with structure and order in her world - inside and out. Her beloved companion arrived hectic and scattered. Guess what she needed? Structure and order in her world - inside and out.
And, at that moment, I got it.
We don't get the dogs who can teach us, we create the dogs who can teach us. Because my friend was struggling with structure and order in her life, she could not offer either to her dog. And her dog, without that help that she needed, went further and further awry into excessive barking, housebreaking issues and general fearful confusion.
This is standard.
Also standard is how healing helping our dogs can be. What we struggle to do for ourselves, we can work hard to do for our companions. And as things are improved for the dog, the human can end up improving things for herself.
And that is one of the truly miraculous parts of this cherished bond, that through our dogs we can find ourselves.
