Watch the video below of a Border Collie competing at a herding trial. In it the handler controls and directs his border collie from hundreds of yards away with the use of whistle commands (those are the high pitched bird-like sounds you will hear). Those whistles mean things like: go right, go left, slow down, lie down, stay.
The task at this trial is for the dog to herd the sheep in a pattern, through a series of gates and then to the handler. There the handler selects two sheep and asks his dog to split them away from the flock (hard to do). Then, together, they pen the animals.
This is no game. This life simply cannot be lived and this living cannot be made without a good dog to help out. There is nothing ill-made or poorly-chosen about this amazing breed of dog although keeping one as a "pet" and nothing more can lead to puzzled and frustrated beings on both sides of the equation.
The clip here opens to a speck in the distance -- a small flock of sheep being held in place by an assisting shepherd and his dog. Next you will see a smaller speck running in from the right hand side of the screen. That's Maico, the border collie competing in this trial.
