Uploading photos again

I don't see the "little red house" people are referring to on the menu bar when attempting to upload straight from harddrive ( as opposed to photo sharing site).
I get that browse my harddrive option for uploading an avatar, but not in the body of a message.
People have been telling me they can see the little red house option - is there something else to know about this?
Stymied.
