HoHoHo can turn into NoNoNO! when you have a puppy in your holiday home. Here are the top five tips to help you end the holidays feeling loving toward your puppy (and yourself):
1. Get the Lead Out
Unlike umbrellas, dog leads can be used safely indoors. Keeping your pup near you can prevent a myriad of mishaps, while allowing you to reward the behaviors you like rather than reacting to what you don’t.
2. Hang'em High
Ornaments - especially round ones - can look like a toy to your eager puppy. Hang round, breakable, or sentimental favorites high, well out of your pup’s reach. Measure “out of reach” by your pup’s height on her hind legs, as pups can get very ambitious about such a project. “A tree IN the house covered with BALLS? It IS Christmas!”
3. Practice Protection
The best way to deal with puppy problems is often simply to prevent them. Close the door to where your tree and all your presents are so your pup can’t get in there to yank on the branches, drink the water out of the stand, water the stand, chew open the presents and otherwise have a grand time! Can’t close a door? Gate off tree with an exercise pen.
4. Supply “Coloring Books”
A new chew toy, bully stick, Kong to stuff or Twist n’ Treat to fill can turn a fussy puppy into a focused, happy puppy in a matter of seconds. Word to the wise here: cranky pups are often sleepy pups. Much easier on all concerned to crate a cranky youngster for a needed nap than to try to train fussiness out of a tired baby.
5. Use Restraint
A crate is great at hectic moments. Pups get tired/overwhelmed, especially when people are visiting all day, everyone is excited and food is everywhere. Planning time to give your pup a good walk, a five minute training session before the influx begins, followed by crating can make the day better for everyone. And isn’t that the goal?
Doing these simple things can make this special time memorable for all - in a good way.
